It's true. Many of the dot com companies started in the last few years didn't survive the dot com fallout that began last April (2000). The Dot Com Fallout has affected thousands - perhaps millions - of people related to the internet economy.

Yet, there is still hope. And maybe it won't take BIG MONEY, just BIG DREAMS.

johnny2k.com, a Dot Com Survivor

by john kubicek, johnny2k.com editor, March 5, 2001

johnny2k (that's me) first thought about working on something special for johnny2k.com's first anniversary. johnny2k.com went "live" (published to our website for visitors to see) on January 12, 2000. It wasn't much, but it was a web presence for johnny2k Home Enterprises.

My plan was to have this page published on that date, one year later - Jan. 12, 2001. That plan went by the wayside, though. Over the period of time, from just after Thanksgiving in November 2000, until now, the initial plans have evolved. The work I did in the "back room" (off-line) didn't even appear online until just after the first of the year, 2001.

My experiences in the last year led me to believe that improvements to johnny2k.com were needed. And sooner than later.

In order to make improvements, it was necessary to step up my efforts, and work longer and harder to accomplish the website facelift. Decisions were made, and are definitely in the process of being carried out.

There are two main reasons for getting the motivation to do things. One reason is desperation. That's when it's a case of do or die, fighting to keep from being stomped. Desperation is derived from fear.

The other reason for motivation is inspiration. That's when a person is in pursuit of a dream. Inspiration is derived from hope.

As I initially began developing the plans to improve this site, and celebrate the first year on the web, something reached out and grabbed me. It was something like a wake-up call. It was a calling, like I was given a "special mission".

Funny, but what I had been doing for the last year was the basis for that "special mission". Setting up this website in order to market our web services, then creating the "Why Work From Home" section, johnny2k found out what the whole mission was all about in the first place.

Becoming highly motivated to make johnny2k.com a successful venture is being driven by inspiration. It is the hope that this website can help other people that is driving my intense desire to give johnny2k.com the ongoing facelift - becoming more of a major overhaul - the website deserved and needed.

I have had the desperate moments, too, over the last year. Challenges came along, and were overcome, but there were a lot of times that fear was driving the motivation to do things needed to survive for the moment. That isn't the direction that I really wanted to go. Those challenges are short-term, and thus, so is the motivation to get things done!

Do you know what this means? I found out that the direction of inspiration is a long-term solution to handling challenges. Inspiration is derived from hope. Hope drives belief and faith. It takes believing in what you are doing, to have faith that your challenges can be overcome, and that your sacrifices will be worth while.

Over the long haul, by moving in the direction of inspiration, many of the current challenges, such as paying all the bills, even the big ones, will eventually no longer be a challenge.

My inspiration also gives me the strength that helps me get through the times when I work too long, and too late in the morning to get a meaningful amount of rest before the next day starts.

By developing a site to assist people thinking about working from home, or anyone already working from home, johnny2k.com has evolved into that "virtual office", a place dedicated to providing solutions to help you deal with challenges and helping you succeed.

When the website facelift was first being dreamed of, johnny2k was learning that the economy seemed to be headed in a down slide. There was the Dot Com collapse in the Spring of 2000. By October 2000, there was talk of a recession. Most of the talk of a possible recession was from the political commentators on late-night cable news. And G. W. Bush's Presidential campaign might have also contributed a little to the fray over the future economic policies and cures.

However, in January of 2001, there was suddenly news of huge layoffs, in sectors of the economy that were thought to be fairly solid up until then. At that point, the mainstream news networks began paying attention to the talk of a possible recession. George W. Bush's request for tax cuts, and the stock market's pleas for Fed Chairman Alan Greenspan to start cutting interest rates indicates to me that a economic recession is now a major issue.

With all of the layoffs, do you know what thought came to me? The fact that many very qualified people recently losing their jobs have skills that could easily be transferred to opportunities in telecommuting and home-based businesses. My inspiration became driven by a powerful dream of helping those people, and many more, that want to transform their skills into a successful home-working situation.

"But, what about the economy," you ask, "and how can johnny2k.com survive the Dot Com slaughter of 2000?"

I made some adjustments, and as I mentioned before, I met challenges and endured my sacrifices. johnny2k.com survived working for my clients in 2000, and putting the money I earned working from home back into this business, keeping my internet and email connections, and keeping johnny2k.com online.

The survival I've referred to isn't a TV show filmed in the Australian Outback. It's getting through tough times. It's sacrificing, not buying any luxuries, not taking a vacation, not living the lifestyle my wife and I had dreamed of, or were used to, in the past. Our survival, in Dot Com terms, is that I am still working from home.

Here's the Good News about being johnny2k.com, Dot Com Survivor. I have some hope - actually, a lot of hope - because of a factor you don't often hear mentioned. The web is still a very new technology. The really BIG Dot-Coms that tanked were created by dreamers.

These people believed in what the future could hold in store for internet ventures. Unfortunately, some ideas were behind the times, some were mismanaged, and many over-stated the short-term investment value.

When the investors behind the big dot-coms saw that ecommerce expectations didn't quite meet, or even come close to, all of the hype. They bailed, driving down stock prices in the ecommerce industry. With huge losses, in the hundreds of millions for some of the ecommerce sites, it became impossible to get additional funding, and those dot-coms were history.

The future of the web is now in the hands of the survivors in the internet-related industry. Yep, that's right. Without mentioning the names of the dot com survivors (you'll hear about them), we'll just say, "watch this!".

Because of the things that are coming, I truly believe that being a dot com survivor, or even a web start-up, is going to be an exciting business to be in.

You are going to see, in the very near future, web sales topping expectations. Yes, you read that correctly. Sounds like hype, I know. You heard it before, and many people have heard it, been there, done that.

    But, here it goes, not even the sky will be the limit;

I glance up at the moon, and I see tomorrow's to-do list,

I gaze into the stars, and see where my dreams coming true will take me.

    Do you see?

What the possibilities are, for you and me?

I wrote the above poetic symbolisms, to emphasize that our survival is going to depend on our dreams. Driven by these dreams, it becomes our motivation derived from hope.

johnny2k.com is a dot com survivor, because I have a great deal of belief in my dream. It's going to be here for the long term, bringing a solution (working from home) with the hope that I can help all kinds of people in one way or another.

This world needs dreamers, now. We need people motivated by their dreams, bringing solutions that help us keep the faith that ALL of us are going to be able to survive.
